Travesty if Snoop wins Reggae Grammy

ROGER Steffens, who headed the Grammy Awards Reggae Committee for 27 years, says it would be a travesty if American rapper Snoop Lion won the Best Reggae Album category at next month's show.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Steffens described Snoop as a "pretentious wanna-be". He is also not impressed with nominees for Best Reggae Album who were announced last Friday in Los Angeles.

"I think it would be a travesty if Snoop wins. He, like Matisyahu and many others before him, have used a Rasta-influenced format and warped it toward their own ends," said Steffens.
Snoop (formerly Snoop Dogg) is nominated for Reincarnated. He says his conversion to Rastafari was inspired by a visit to Jamaica in 2012 when he experienced a spiritual awakening while meeting with a group of Rastafarian elders.
Sly and Robbie and the Jam Masters' Reggae Connection, Sizzla's The Messiah, One Love, One Life by Beres Hammond and Ziggy Marley in Concert are the other nominees for Best Reggae Album.
Steffens formed the Reggae Committee and served as its chairman until 2011. He has openly criticised the selection process, claiming that judges favour albums produced by the Marley family.
The Marleys have dominated the category since it was established in 1985. Brothers Ziggy, Damian and Stephen have won Grammys as solo acts, while Ziggy and Steve won multiple times as members of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.
Steffens, considered an authority on Bob Marley and the Wailers, believes this year's nominees maintain the trend of mediocre selections.

"The nominations this year fit into the pocket of name recognition more than anything else, regardless of sales or actual quality," he said.
Reincarnated, with sales of over 80,000 units, is the best selling reggae album for 2013. The year has been poor in terms of sales by Jamaican artistes, with American reggae bands performing better on the Billboard charts.
The Snoop set attracted mass coverage from mainstream media in the United States, due to his conversion from 'gangsta rap' icon to cultural artiste.
The lanky rapper (real name Calvin Broadus) is one of the godfathers of gangsta rap which emerged out of southern California's impoverished communities in the early 1990s with hardcore rap acts such as NWA and Ice T.
The 56th annual Grammy Awards is scheduled for the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on January 26.

Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, has welcomed the expansion of the University of Technology (UTech) to western Jamaica, noting that the move represents a good investment by the institution in Jamaica’s future.
He was speaking at the official opening ceremony for the new campus located on Dome Street in Montego Bay, St. James on Friday, November 8.
“Today is a good day for Jamaica and a good day for all of us.The Ministry of Education, on behalf of the people of Jamaica…is happy to welcome this new addition to western Jamaica,” Minister Thwaites said.

He called on the community of Montego Bay and its environs to support the university, noting that “this is a huge investment and so it must be given pride of place.”
“The coming of UTech in full splendor to Montego Bay marks another aspect of the maturity of this city and I trust that the institution will be demand-driven,” he stated.
Observing that there are some seven university campuses in western Jamaica, Minister Thwaities that by coming to Montego Bay, UTech is now part of a proud university family in the second city.
He urged the UTech administration to seek to build a close relationship with the HEART Trust/NTA, which is located “next door”, and to emphasise science and technology in its programme offerings to equip students “to transform the economy of our country.”

Trinidad &Tobago Prime Minister backs deportation of 13 Jamaicans

TRINIDAD and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says her country did absolutely nothing wrong in the deportation of 13 Jamaicans last week, the Trinidad Express reported in its online edition yesterday.
According to the newspaper, the prime minister's stance was taken following receipt of the official report from the Immigration Division that was presented to her by Security Minister Gary Griffith.

Until any further evidence comes forward, based on that report it appears we are in compliance with the law," the Express reported Persad-Bissessar as saying yesterday.
Despite her strong position, however, Persad-Bissessar has advised Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Dookeran to travel to Jamaica in order to have discussions with his "counterparts" to address the issue.
She has also signalled her intention to hold discussions with Trade Minister Vasant Bharath over the threat of a boycott of Trinidad and Tobago products in Jamaica, in response to last week's deportation.
"I have advised Minister Dookeran to accept the invitation, a letter of invitation came (yesterday) from Jamaica to Minister Dookeran and I have asked him to accept that invitation to speak with his counterparts there," Persad-Bissessar said yesterday after the official hand-over ceremony of the Arima Police Station.

The invitation to Dookeran from Jamaica's Foreign Minister AJ Nicholson came in the wake of 13 Jamaican nationals being deported after being denied entry into this country last week. The 13 Jamaicans were not allowed to leave the Piarco International Airport after landing there last week Tuesday, in breach of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas which allows for free movement of Caribbean Community (Caricom) nationals among Caricom Member States.
However, the Express said Persad-Bissessar yesterday referenced the recent ruling by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in the Shanique Myrie case to highlight this county's adherence to all rules.
Myrie had filed a lawsuit against the Barbados Government, claiming that on March 14, 2011, she was made to undergo a painful and humiliating body cavity search by a Barbadian border official upon her arrival at the Sir Grantley Adams International Airport from Jamaica.

Persad-Bissessar said following the CCJ's ruling in the Myrie matter Caricom issued some guidelines to all the governments of members states, but maintained that there are discretions that can be exercised by immigration officials.
